Be Wise and Watching

A couple weeks ago I wrote “Watch.”
I talked about being sober, self-controlled, to be discreet, to be vigilant, to be awake and watching

Today we are going to ask how do we watch?

Matthew 10:16 Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.

My word from 5/5/16 “You must be bold and unafraid in the hour of persecution; wise as a serpent, gentle as a dove. A serpent slithers up without notice. It goes in places and sees without being seen. Its eyes are made to see in light and in darkness. It is aware of danger, and can bite if necessary.

A dove is gentle, as the Holy Spirit that lives in you is gentle. It watches as it flies and is aware of its surroundings. It lands gently, and is beautiful to look upon. Hear from heaven this morning. I send you out, smart, aware, cunning, yet gentle, loving, and kind......”

Many snakes can see well at night. they have infrared sensors like night vision goggles. Using their eyes and sensors they can see in the light and in the darkness. We as Christians need to also see in the light, but we also must see in the darkness. We have a sensor also, and that sensor is Holy Spirit, He lives inside of us, and He guides us in the spiritual light, but also in the spiritual darkness.

Spiritual darkness seems to be consuming the earth, but we as Christians know better than that. God is in control. He sets the rules! As humans we were given something very precious by God, the earth. Adam and Eve handed their ruler-ship over to Satan in the Garden of Eden.  Because of this there is much evil in this earth, but it will be reclaimed the day our Lord returns to the earth.  Therefore we know this is just a time frame of sorrow and pain. One day we will rule again with Jesus.

How do we watch? Wisely!

In Matthew 2 it tells us about the wise men that went to worship the child Savior, Jesus. We do not know how many wise men there were, the bible does not say. They brought gold, frankincense and myrrh, 3 items, so we represent them as 3 wise men in our plays and such. They traveled a long way. There was only a limited way to travel in that day and it took a long time to get somewhere. An example of this is in
Ezra 7:9 On the first day of the first month he began his journey from Babylon, and on the first day of the fifth month he came to Jerusalem, according to the good hand of his God upon him. [It took at least 4 months to travel from Babylon to Jerusalem.]

Wise men:
They came from the east
G3097 Of foreign origin; Magi; by implication a magician: - sorcerer, wise man.
There are 2 types of Magi: one is a pagan magi and the other a God fearing Magi.

Daniel 2:48-49 Then the king promoted Daniel and gave him many great gifts; and he made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief administrator over all the wise men of Babylon. 49 Also Daniel petitioned the king, and he set Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego over the affairs of the province of Babylon; but Daniel sat in the gate of the king.

The wise men of Jesus day were watching for the Messiah. Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego were over the provinces of Babylon. There were wise men in the east that feared God, and knew and followed Him, and His ways.

The wise men traveled from far away to see the Messiah to bring Him gifts and to worship Him. They had to have studied to even know to be watching for the Messiah, and we know they heard from God because in a dream they were told by God to go another way to avoid Herod.

Key words: watched, studied, heard, dreamed, traveled, brought gifts, worshiped

This is good instruction for us to become wise men and women of God.

Proverbs 1:5, A wise man will hear and increase learning,
And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel,

9:9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser;
Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

10:8 The wise in heart will receive commands,
But a prating fool will fall.

12:15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes,
But he who heeds counsel is wise.

My next blog will go over what the scripture told us would be the signs to watch for, but for today be wise and watching for you do not know the hour your Lord will return.
