Acts 12:11 And when Peter had come to himself, he said, “Now I know for certain that the Lord has sent His angel, and has delivered me from the hand of Herod and from all the expectation of the Jewish people.”
12 So, when he had considered this, he came to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose surname was Mark, where many were gathered together praying. 13 And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a girl named Rhoda came to answer. 14 When she recognized Peter’s voice, because of her gladness she did not open the gate, but ran in and announced that Peter stood before the gate. 15 But they said to her, “You are beside yourself!” Yet she kept insisting that it was so. So they said, “It is his angel.”
16 Now Peter continued knocking; and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished. 17 But motioning to them with his hand to keep silent, he declared to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, “Go, tell these things to James and to the brethren.” And he departed and went to another place. [NKJV]
Peter was thrown into prison, and the church was in constant prayer for him the bible says. An angel comes and releases Peter from prison, and he goes to those that were in prayer, and knocks on the door. Rhoda is so excited she runs to tell the others. They do not believe her, but on her insistence they say it must be his angel.
Have you ever wondered in reading this story why they would think it was his angel? I always was so excited about the rest of the story I never stopped to consider what that meant. Some say that every person has a guardian angel, and believe that is what they were referring to. Others believe they thought Peter had been murdered, and they spoke of his spirit at the door. I'm sure there are many theories, but what catches my attention is they were easier to believe in an angel at the door than Peter himself, yet that was the very thing they were gathered together to pray for!
I don't know if I should marvel over the fact that they must have had encounters with angels so frequently they thought nothing of it, or if I should laugh because they are so much like us today. The answer to prayer can be in front of us and we choose to believe it is something else.
I believe in frequently seeing angels and having them intervene and help us is coming. There will be a time our loved ones, or ourselves, will desperately need help and we will pray and the Lord will send our angel. I know this happens but not at a frequency we would see where we believe it is an angel at the door and not the person themselves.
Be blessed and be a blessing today.
